A heat management device is the difference between a session that lasts an hour and one that tastes burnt after ten minutes. Here you'll find Kaloud-style HMDs, Provost systems, wind covers for outdoor use, screens and 40-micron foil on a roll or pre-cut.
Heat management device or foil
Foil is the classic option: it goes over the bowl, you poke holes in it and the coals sit on top. It's cheap and it works, but you have to redo it every time, and temperature control depends on where you place the charcoal. A heat management device is a metal cap that encloses the coals: it keeps the temperature steady, stops ash from falling and lets you raise or lower the heat by opening or closing the lid.
If you use phunnel bowls, an HMD gets much more out of them. And whatever your setup, the size of your coconut charcoal cubes (26, 27 or 28 mm) has to match what your HMD takes.
Frequently asked questions
Heat management device or foil?
An HMD keeps the temperature steady and is reusable; foil is cheaper and lets you adjust the holes, but you have to redo it every session.
Which one heats better?
An HMD holds the temperature better over long sessions; foil heats up faster and is cheaper to replace.
What size charcoal do I need?
Whatever your HMD takes: 26 mm is the most common, while 27 and 28 mm are used in wider HMDs. You'll find them all in coconut charcoal.
Can I use an HMD with a traditional bowl?
Yes, although the heat spreads less evenly than with a phunnel. We explain it in what a heat management device is.
