The hose and mouthpiece are what you touch with every draw, and also the first things to get dirty. Silicone hoses can be washed and don't hold on to flavour; aluminium or carbon hose handles add rigidity and comfort. Disposable mouth tips are a must if you smoke in a group.
Hose, mouthpiece and downstem: what each part does
The hose is what you draw through, and there are washable and non-washable ones: washable hoses are made of silicone or have a plastic inner lining and can be rinsed, while the old leather ones cannot. The mouthpiece is the part at the tip, and disposable mouth tips are the practical way to share a shisha without sharing the mouthpiece. The downstem is the tube that goes down into the water: it should be submerged by about two or three centimetres, no more and no less.
All these parts are replaced with use, just like grommets and seals. If you are changing the hose, take the opportunity to check the base and the tray seals.
Frequently asked questions
Can a shisha hose be washed?
Silicone ones can, with lukewarm water and mild soap. Leather or fabric ones cannot: they absorb water and get damaged.
Is my hose washable?
If the inside is silicone or plastic, yes. Rinse it with lukewarm water and hang it up to dry, never coiled with water inside.
Are disposable mouth tips worth it?
For sessions with several people, yes: everyone uses their own. We explain why in the advantages of disposable mouth tips.
How far should the downstem be submerged?
Between two and three centimetres. With more water it is harder to draw; with less, the draw is harsh.
